Replacing deteriorating slate at exterior doors

Aesthetic Tile replaced deteriorating slate on these Windermere exterior steps. The original slate was about 25 years old.

The replacement used decorative porcelain intended for exposed exterior conditions. The photographs show the completed steps at the doors and a closer view of the patterned tile during installation.

Project 02 · Slate floor addition

Lacing a new office floor into existing slate

Materials & details: New and existing slate blended to match thickness and finish

For a separate Windermere project, a new slate office floor needed to meet a slate floor installed eight years earlier. Material was sourced through The Tile Shop, and new boxes were blended with the old material.

Aesthetic Tile selectively removed hallway pieces to lace the new floor into the existing floor, matching its thickness and finish. The client later returned for maintenance and repair work.

To match a floor, we start with the material already there, including its thickness, variation, and condition. Close photos and any spare pieces help us see what needs to match.

At an exposed doorway, we review the base, slope, drainage, and the manufacturer’s approval for outdoor wet use. Those conditions need checking at the property before we plan the replacement.
